5 Stripes Socks: The Escuyer Icon Inspired by Sporting Heritage

Escuyer 5 Stripes socks — the most recognisable design in the collection, inspired by 1960s and 70s sporting heritage, handcrafted in Portugal

Some designs earn their place through decades of quiet relevance. The Escuyer 5 Stripes sock is one of them. Inspired by the sporting culture of the 1960s and 70s (the track, the tennis court, the skate park), the five-stripe pattern has become the most recognisable signature in the Escuyer collection, and our best-selling sock. Not because it shouts, but because it says exactly the right thing: that the person wearing it has a sense of where good design comes from.

5 Stripes Socks for Men and Women: Why They’re Trending in 2026

Retro athletic striped socks are back, worn with trainers and offering a sporty, nostalgic touch that speaks to several generations at once. Retro stripes were called out at New York Fashion Week as one of the defining pattern trends of the season, and they pair easily with everything from joggers to denim.

The Escuyer 5 Stripes collection sits right at the centre of this. Bold enough to be intentional, refined enough to work across every context, from a relaxed weekend outfit to a more considered casual look. And with a colourway for every wardrobe, finding your pair is less a question of taste than of occasion.

The Story Behind the Escuyer 5 Stripes Design

The five-stripe sock has its roots in mid-century American sportswear: the thick ribbed crew sock with contrast stripe bands at the cuff that became a staple of athletics from the 1960s onwards. Basketball courts, tennis clubs, skate parks and running tracks all shared the same visual language: a clean white or ecru base, broken by two, three, or five bands of bold contrasting colour just above the shoe line.

At Escuyer, we’ve taken that heritage and refined it. Each pair in the 5 Stripes collection is knitted from a premium cotton blend on vintage machines at our family-owned factory near Braga, in northern Portugal, by artisans who have spent generations perfecting the craft of fine knitwear. The result is a sock that looks like it belongs to an era worth revisiting, feels soft against the skin, and holds its colour and shape wash after wash. A touch of nostalgia, made with the kind of craftsmanship that makes it timeless rather than costumey.

The Kits Behind the Stripes: The Teams That Inspired Our Colourways

Every 5 Stripes colourway starts with a photograph: a vest on a track, a jersey in a stadium, a sock pulled up over a shin pad somewhere between the mid-60s and the mid-80s. None of our socks are official team products. These are simply the kits we kept coming back to when choosing our colours.

  • Ecru / Blue / Red: the tricolore stripe. It recalls the French national teams of the era, from Les Bleus to the athletics vests worn at Montreal ’76, and the bold red-white-blue bands of early Paris Saint-Germain shirts. (Women · Men)
  • Off Black / Ecru: the two-tone that never dated. Think Juventus and Newcastle in their black-and-white bars, or the All Blacks with a single white stripe cutting through the darkness. (Women)
  • Orange / Ecru: unmistakably Dutch. The Oranje of the 1974 and 1978 World Cup sides, Cruyff-era total football, and the same orange on Dutch cycling jerseys of the 70s. (Men)
  • Yellow / Red: a high-contrast pairing with Belgian roots: the red and yellow of the Red Devils’ tricolour, but also Galatasaray’s halves and the sang et or of RC Lens. (Women)
  • Bright Blue / Ecru / Navy: the blue stack. It echoes Italy’s azzurri, Inter Milan’s blue-and-black, and the sky-blue-and-white of Argentina around 1978. (Women)
  • Blue / Orange / Ecru and Ecru / Orange / Blue: the New York stripe. The Knicks and the Mets wore this combination at Madison Square Garden and Shea Stadium through the 70s; in Europe, it’s the palette of Montpellier. (Women · Men)
  • Wine / Red: deep and saturated, in the spirit of Torino’s granata, AS Roma’s maroon, and the claret of Burnley. (Women)
  • Pink / Wine and Red / Pink / Bordeaux: tonal warmth drawn from Italian cycling: the Giro’s maglia rosa, Palermo’s pink, and the faded reds of a peloton photographed in the Dolomites. (Women)
  • Pink / Red / Orange: a direct homage to one of the most radical kits ever made: the Houston Astros’ rainbow jersey of 1975, a sunset in stripes. (Women)
  • Gold / Ecru: championship tones: the green-and-gold of the Australian national sides stripped back to the gold alone, and the colour of a podium’s top step. (Women)
  • Green Flash: named after the plimsoll that defined British tennis: the Dunlop Green Flash worn by Fred Perry, with a flash of the green of Wimbledon’s grass. (Women)
  • Ecru / Blue / Yellow: Scandinavia and California at once: Sweden’s blue-and-yellow, the Golden State Warriors of the 70s, and Boca Juniors’ blue-and-gold. (Women · Men)
  • Yellow / Khaki / Blue and Khaki / Blue / Yellow: the same yellow-and-blue, grounded with khaki from outdoor kit: Swedish cross-country skiing and the trail-running vests of the early 80s.
  • Ecru / Green / Blue, Ecru / Green / Strong Blue and Blue / Bright Green / Ecru: green-and-blue from the Pacific Northwest: the Seattle Seahawks and Sounders, and Brazil’s green, blue and white when the yellow is left in the drawer. (Women)
  • Black / Green / Ecru: sharp and graphic: Celtic’s hoops, Werder Bremen’s green-and-white, Mexico’s green with a black trim. (Women)
  • Green / Ecru / Khaki and Green / Agave / Sand: the grass palette: the Boston Celtics’ green, Ireland’s rugby jersey, and the greens and sands of Augusta’s fairways. (Men · Women)
  • Brown / Blue / Navy and Orange / Hazelnut / Sand: 70s American baseball at its boldest: the San Diego Padres’ brown-and-gold era, with the Cleveland Browns’ orange somewhere in the mix. (Men · Women)
  • Yellow / Violet / Wine: purple and gold is the Los Angeles Lakers of the Showtime years and Fiorentina’s viola, but for a Brussels brand, it’s also a quiet nod to Anderlecht’s mauve. (Women)

How to Style Escuyer 5 Stripes Socks

The 5 Stripes sock works hardest when it’s allowed to be seen. It was made to be worn with trainers, and it is just as good with loafers. Here are the combinations that work best:

  • With white trainers: the classic pairing. Pull the sock to just above the shoe collar and let the stripe do the work. The Women’s Ecru / Blue / Red (€25) or Men’s Ecru / Blue / Red (€25) are both perfect for this.
  • With loafers: a collegiate combination that puts the stripe front and centre. The stripe sits just above the collar of the loafer, adding a flash of colour to even the simplest outfit.
  • With rolled-up jeans or shorts: show more of the sock, show more of the stripe. Pulled to mid-calf with the hem rolled up, the 5 Stripes makes a confident statement without any effort.
  • With boat shoes: the maritime heritage of the boat shoe and the sporting heritage of the stripe make natural companions. Try the Men’s Blue / Orange / Ecru (€25) for a look that references the best of 1970s coastal dressing.

Cotton 5 Stripes Socks Made in Portugal: Why Escuyer

Every pair of Escuyer 5 Stripes socks is made in the same family-owned factory near Braga, in northern Portugal, where every other Escuyer sock is produced. Premium cotton blend, vintage knitting machines, a hand-linked toe, strict quality control: the same standards that apply to the cashmere collection apply here. The difference is in the detail: the precise placement of five stripe bands, the consistency of the colour across every wash, and the ribbed structure that keeps the sock sitting exactly where it should throughout the day.

Vintage-inspired sock patterns are classics that never really go out of style, combining the nostalgia of decades gone by with the craftsmanship that makes them worth owning. At Escuyer, that’s precisely what we’ve been making from the beginning.

Questions we are asked

What shoes go with striped crew socks?
White trainers are the easiest match: pull the sock just above the shoe collar and let the stripes show. Loafers and boat shoes work well too, especially with cropped or rolled-up trousers that leave the cuff of the sock visible.

Are striped socks still in style?
Yes. Retro athletic stripes have been a steady staple since the 1970s and are worn today with trainers, loafers and cropped denim. A few bands of colour at the cuff add personality without making the whole outfit about the socks.

How high should crew socks sit?
A crew sock should sit around mid-calf, a few centimetres above the ankle bone, and stay there without being pulled up through the day. A ribbed leg and a little elastane in the yarn are what stop it sliding down into the shoe.

What size are Escuyer 5 Stripes socks?
Escuyer makes one women's size, EU 36 to 41 (UK 3.5 to 7.5), and one men's size, EU 40 to 46 (UK 6.5 to 11, US 7.5 to 12). One size per gender is a deliberate choice, to keep things simple.

What are Escuyer 5 Stripes socks made of?
They are 80% cotton, 19% polyamide and 1% elastane, knitted on vintage machines at a family-owned factory near Braga, in northern Portugal, with a hand-linked toe. 5 Stripes is the best-selling Escuyer sock and costs €25 a pair.
