Style Tips: How to Wear Earthy Tones This Autumn

Escuyer Women 5 Stripes socks in orange, hazelnut and sand worn with black loafers and jeans in Brussels

Every autumn the same palette comes back: khaki, olive, tobacco, rust, mustard, a few shades of brown and the sand and ecru tones that sit between them. It comes back because it works. Earthy tones flatter almost everyone, they suit the light at this time of year, and they make a wardrobe of simple pieces look considered without any effort.

The difficulty is not finding the colours. It is wearing them without looking like a single block of beige. Here is how we think about it, from the sock up, with the pieces we reach for ourselves between October and February.

What counts as an earthy tone

Think of the colours you would find on a walk in the woods in November. Soil and bark: brown, tobacco, chocolate. Dry grass and fallen leaves: sand, hazelnut, cumin, mustard, rust. What is still green: khaki, olive, moss. And the pale neutrals that hold it all together: ecru, cream, natural.

Two things make these colours easy to wear. First, they all share a warm, slightly muted base, so almost any two of them sit comfortably next to each other. Second, they are quiet enough to let a single sharper note stand out: a flash of blue, a stripe of orange, a dark navy coat. That contrast is what keeps an earthy outfit from going flat.

1. Start at the feet: plain and melange socks

The simplest way into the palette is a plain crew sock in khaki or cumin. Worn with brown shoes and a camel, olive or stone trouser, the sock disappears into the leg and the whole outfit reads as one warm line from hem to shoe. It is the autumn equivalent of navy with navy.

Melange goes one step further. The yarn is spun from two or three shades at once, so a brown melange sock already contains the ochre and the chocolate that the rest of the outfit is built on. Dark khaki melange does the same for olive and moss. Mustard melange is the one to pick when the trouser is brown and you want the sock to be noticed.

All of our cotton socks are knitted from the same soft blend (80% cotton, 19% polyamide, 1% elastane) on vintage machines at a family-owned factory near Braga, in northern Portugal, with a hand-linked toe so there is no seam to feel inside a leather shoe.

2. Tone on tone, with one sharper note

Once the base is in place, the sock is where an earthy outfit gets its personality. The rule we use: keep two of the colours inside the palette and let the third be the sharper note.

Olive and brown stripes on a crew sock are pure tone on tone, and look best with a brown boot and a dark olive trouser. Mustard and brown in a two-tone colour block is a little warmer and sits well under raw denim. For the sharper note, blue and rust is the pairing we come back to every year: the rust belongs to the season, the blue wakes it up. Our 5 Stripes socks do the same job with five bands at the cuff; orange, hazelnut and sand for women, brown, blue and navy for men.

If you want pattern rather than stripe, a brown leopard crew sock is the most wearable animal print there is: brown on sand, nothing louder, and it goes with every earthy tone in the wardrobe. Tie dye in rust and mustard is the looser, weekend version of the same idea.

3. Cashmere for the colder weeks

From late November the cotton sock gives way to cashmere. Ours are a cashmere and merino wool blend, knitted fine in a crew height with a light rib, so they fit inside a leather shoe or a boot like a cotton sock would. The earthy colours suit the yarn particularly well: a mustard cashmere sock has a depth that cotton cannot quite match, and khaki or beige cashmere with a brown boot is as warm as an outfit gets.

4. Leather: cognac, khaki, natural

Leather is the natural home of the earthy palette, and vegetable-tanned leather more than any other. Ours comes from the Tempesti tannery in Tuscany and is tanned with plant extracts rather than chrome, which gives the colours a warmth that only deepens with use. Cognac and natural are the two that change the most: a natural card sleeve starts pale and turns honey-coloured over a season in a front pocket.

Pick the wallet to echo the shoe, not match it. A cognac card sleeve with a dark brown boot, a khaki slim wallet with olive trousers, a light brown cardholder with a camel coat. Unusually for vegetable-tanned leather, every one of our wallets comes in a wide range of colours, so there is a brown, a khaki or a mustard for each model.

Shop card sleeves, cardholders, slim wallets and billfold wallets.

5. The beanie that pulls it together

A beanie is the easiest way to repeat one colour from the feet at the top of the outfit, which is the trick that makes an earthy look feel deliberate. Tobacco with brown melange socks. Khaki with a khaki crew. Mustard as the single bright note above an outfit of olive and brown. Cream when everything else is dark and you want some light near the face.

Ours are knitted in pure Italian merino with a deep rib, in Portugal, and they are warm without being bulky.

Shop merino beanies.

Three outfits, from the sock up

The outfit Sock Leather Beanie
Olive chinos, brown boots, navy coat Olive / brown stripe, or blue / rust for a sharper note Khaki slim wallet Khaki
Camel coat, cream knit, raw denim, loafers Brown melange, or mustard / brown block Cognac card sleeve Tobacco
Black trousers, black boots, oversized sand jumper Women 5 Stripes in orange / hazelnut / sand, or brown leopard Natural card sleeve Cream

A simple rule: three earthy tones, one of them repeated somewhere else in the outfit, and at most one colour from outside the palette.

Frequently asked questions

What colours count as earthy tones?

Browns, from tobacco to chocolate; the yellows and oranges of dry leaves, such as mustard, cumin, rust and hazelnut; the greens that remain in winter, like khaki, olive and moss; and the pale neutrals that connect them, such as sand, ecru and cream. They share a warm, muted base, which is why they sit so easily together.

How do I wear earthy tones without looking washed out?

Vary the depth. Pair a pale tone (sand, ecru, cream) with a dark one (chocolate, olive, tobacco) rather than wearing three mid-tones together. Add one sharper colour, such as navy, blue or orange, in a small dose: a sock stripe or a scarf is enough.

Which sock colour goes with brown shoes in autumn?

Khaki, cumin or brown melange if you want the sock to blend with the trouser. Mustard, rust or an olive and brown stripe if you want it to show. Avoid black socks with brown shoes; a dark khaki or navy sock does the same job and looks warmer.

Can I wear earthy tones with black?

Yes, and it is one of the sharpest combinations of the season. Black trousers and boots with a sand or camel knit, then a sock in brown leopard or an orange, hazelnut and sand stripe to bridge the two. Keep the leather in cognac or natural rather than black so the outfit does not go cold.

What wallet colour works with earthy tones?

Cognac, light brown, khaki, natural and mustard all work. Choose a shade that echoes rather than matches the shoe: a cognac wallet with a dark brown boot, khaki with olive trousers. Vegetable-tanned leather in these colours darkens and gains character with use, so a natural card sleeve will look richer by spring.

Are earthy tones only for men?

Not at all. The whole palette works for women as well, and our women's range covers it: melange and colour block socks in mustard and brown, 5 Stripes in orange, hazelnut and sand, brown leopard, khaki and beige cashmere, and unisex wallets and beanies in the same tones.
