Who Made Your Socks? Meet the People Behind Escuyer

Escuyer socks made in Portugal — sustainable, ethical production in a family-run factory 80km from Porto

Every pair of Escuyer socks begins the same way: with a question worth asking. Not just what to make, but how to make it, and who makes it. At a time when fashion moves fast and transparency is rare, we believe knowing where your socks come from matters as much as how they look.

Made in Portugal: Why It Matters

Our socks are made at a family-run factory near Braga, in northern Portugal, whose owner Ricardo has spent his whole career on the craft. We visit often, know the team personally, and have built a relationship grounded in shared values: quality without compromise, and production without shortcuts. The Portuguese textile and clothing industry counts around 12,000 companies, most of them small, and employs more than 120,000 people. In 2025 it exported €5.5 billion of textiles and clothing.

The People Behind Your Escuyer Socks

Producing in Portugal means more than quality control: it means accountability. Factory work in Portugal is covered by EU labour law, with a national minimum wage, regulated hours and inspections. Ricardo’s family has been in the garment industry for generations. The knowledge passed down, about yarn, about tension, about how a great sock should feel after the hundredth wash, is not something you can source from a spreadsheet.

Sustainability Built In, Not Bolted On

At Escuyer, we’ve worked this way from the beginning, not because it became a trend, but because it’s the only way we know how to make things well. Keeping production close means we can visit the factory regularly, respond quickly to quality concerns, and build the kind of long-term relationship that produces better socks year after year.

Questions we are asked

Are socks knitted by hand or by machine?
Almost all socks today are knitted by machine, on circular knitting machines that make the sock as a tube from cuff to toe. The hand work comes after: closing the toe, checking each sock by eye, pairing it with its twin and finishing it.

What is a hand-linked toe?
A hand-linked toe is a toe seam closed stitch by stitch, joining the last row of loops so the seam lies flat. You barely feel it inside the shoe, which means less rubbing than the thick, machine-sewn ridge found on cheaper socks.

Why are some socks knitted on vintage machines?
Vintage knitting machines run slower than modern ones, and that slower pace gives the fabric a denser, softer hand. Makers who keep them accept fewer socks per hour in exchange for that texture.

Why does my sock have small loose threads on the surface?
On melange and mixed yarns, small loose ends or loops on the surface are normal. They come from the way the yarn is built and knitted, not from a fault, and they do not mean the sock will unravel. You can trim them carefully with scissors if they bother you.

Who makes Escuyer socks?
